What We Do

Civil Engineering Services in Sydney SPAD Consulting Engineers provide civil engineering services in Sydney to the residential, commercial, industrial, Government, community, education and aged care sectors. Our civil engineers advise clients on stormwater and drainage requirements for homes, multi-storey residential and mixed-use commercial developments, parks and community recreation areas and roads. Drainage issues occur when the discharge of rainwater is not adequately managed or allowed to discharge. Civil engineering services covers:

  • Pavement design for car parks, access roads and driveways
  • Embankments and retaining walls
  • Culverts and foot bridges
  • Machine Foundations
  • Drainage structures
  • Temporary dams

Civil engineers conduct flood studies for residential and commercial projects and for councils. A flood study is a detailed technical investigation of how a flood behaves in a particular area or property. The aims of a flood study are to consider the level, extent and quantity of water flooding in an area. Based on the study, a flood report is written to advise on how best to manage the risks presented by the flood. Solutions can include overland flow paths and dams. Issues during flooding periods could be exacerbated due to debris blocking the drainage channels. SPAD designs debris control devices to prevent this from happening. Debris control devices used most commonly on roads, near parks in low-lying areas and are installed by councils. Civil engineers advice on on-site stormwater detention. On-site Stormwater Detention (OSD) is the process of collecting rain, storing it temporarily, then releasing it slowly so as to not worsen downstream flooding. On-site Stormwater Detention is usually required on new developments (villas, townhouses, factories, etc.) to ensure make sure flooding in an area does not worsen because of it. SPAD’s civil engineering services in Sydney includes pavement design for car parks, driveways and access roads, primarily for new developments. We design and certify driveways, access roads and car parks complying to AS2890 and Council DCP (Development Control Plan). Our pavement design covers concrete and asphalt solutions, including bonded and unbonded designs. As well as for residential developments with townhouses and apartments, access roads are used on commercial and industrial sites, for example on the site of the NBN – Satellite Ground Station in Alice Springs. Commonly, our civil engineers design retaining walls and embankments. These are used to maintain the natural ground level at the boundary of a property. Retaining walls are structures or “walls” designed to create unnatural slopes and prevent soil and earth from giving way. They are used mostly in hilly areas, where the terrain possesses an undesirable slope and the retaining wall binds the soil between two different elevations. Our civil engineers investigate and provide advice on remediation or reconstruction of retaining walls. Retaining walls sometimes fail in their performance due to normal conditions of age and deterioration; or sometimes the original design was inadequate. We inspect the walls and give advice on how to fix minor problems or how to reconstruct a new wall that will withstand the environmental conditions. We provide designs and certificates for temporary and permanent shoring for excavation using steel piles, contiguous piles and shoulder pier systems. Shoring is the process used to support a building or excavation site with shores or props, when there is danger of collapse. Our civil engineering services in Sydney covers stormwater drainage, flood study and pavement design for the residential, commercial, industrial, Government, community, education and aged care sectors. SPAD’s key civil engineering projects include:

  • Remediation of a 60-70 metre long retaining wall in North Rocks for Hills Shire Council
  • Remediation and re-assembly of a 4-metre high retaining wall in North Sydney, in a heritage conservation area
  • Design of access road to the Satellite Ground Station in Alice Springs for the National Broadband Network (NBN) project with Cockram Construction.
  • Temporary dam designed to allow remedial works of drainage channel – preventing tide from one direction and allow flood flow in opposite direction
